Cedar Mulch — $85/cubic yard. Natural aromatic finish, breaks down slowly, deters insects.

Why Mulch Depth Matters

Too thin and it does almost nothing — weeds punch through and moisture escapes just as fast as bare soil. Too thick, piled against trunks and stems, and it holds moisture against bark in a way that invites rot and pests. A properly installed 2-3 inch layer, kept clear of direct trunk contact, is the sweet spot that actually delivers the weed suppression and moisture retention mulch is supposed to provide.

Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down and needs refreshing every year or two, making it the better fit for beds full of growing, changing plants. Rock doesn’t decompose and stays put far longer, which makes it a better match for foundation borders, drainage areas, or xeriscape sections where you want a permanent, low-water finish rather than an annual refresh.

How Much Do You Actually Need?

A cubic yard of mulch covers roughly 100 square feet at a proper 3-inch depth, though bed shape and existing mulch levels change that estimate. We measure beds during a site visit so you’re ordering the right amount rather than guessing and ending up short mid-project or paying for extra that sits in the driveway.

Cedar vs. Dyed: More Than Just Looks

Cedar holds its natural tone as it ages and slowly lightens to a soft gray, while dyed mulch keeps a consistent rich color longer before fading but eventually needs a fresh coat to maintain that look. Cedar’s natural oils also do a better job discouraging some insects, which matters more right up against a foundation than out in a garden bed.
