There’s a real difference between a curated bed that reads as intentional from the street and a collection of plants someone bought one Saturday and stuck in the ground wherever there was space. The difference is layering — height, bloom time, texture, and color working together instead of competing.

Sun exposure, soil type, and how close a bed sits to downspouts or a slope all determine which plants will actually thrive there rather than just survive the first season. Central Kansas clay soil in particular often needs amending before planting, since it drains slowly and can hold too much water around roots that need better drainage.
